They worship a (mostly) dead race (the Forerunners) of ancient aliens that were wiped out by a zombie intergalactic virus (The Flood) created by an even older race of aliens (The Precursors) as a giant fuck to the Forerunners for killing them off. The covenant who now worship the Forerunners because they missed read some stuff are hell bent on committing galactic mass murder suicide, because their religion said so. They have rumors that one Forerunner might be alive some planet named Requiem, they find it and Didact wakes from his 100,000 year sleep, and instant makes plans to kill of all humans (nerdy massive back story, nothing important)
